Let's get it working.

If you need help with any part of the process, you'll find it here.

setup

How to install for the first time

Download the Felt Instruments Installer. Redeem the download code that came with your order, then do the steps on screen.

Which folder should I choose for the samples?

This guide applies only to instrument plugins. Effects do not need this procedure.

You can choose any folder you like, on your internal drive or an external one. Four rules apply:

  • Never move the samples after installation. A move breaks the link between the sounds and the plugin, so download straight to the folder you want to keep them in.
  • Turn cloud sync off for this folder. With sync on, the plugin cannot stream the samples in real time. Keep the samples out of any synced folder.
  • Do not use a system-restricted area. App Data, Library and Applications on Mac, and Program Files on Windows, do not work.
  • Do not use a folder you might clear by accident, such as Downloads or the Desktop.

If you already downloaded to one of these places and the plugin has no sound, see "No sound / can't find the samples" below. It explains how to re-link the samples folder.

I lost my download code!

You can ask for your codes again. Download the Felt Instruments Installer, run it, and accept the licence terms. Then click the "can't find the codes?" button at the bottom left of the installer. Confirm your email address, and I send all your download codes again.

How to re-install on the same computer

Open the Felt Instruments Installer and accept the licence terms. Choose "manage a plugin" at the bottom left, then pick the plugin you want.

From there you can re-install the plugin files if they do not appear in your DAW, download the samples again, re-link them, or uninstall the plugin.

Installing on a second computer

Download the Felt Instruments Installer on the new machine and enter your download code. You can install on as many machines as you personally use. If you want to share the plugins with someone else, they need their own licence.

Can I upgrade from a trial to a full licence?

Yes. Redeem the download code for the full version on a machine where you already installed the trial. The installer then asks whether to download everything, or only the extra content and the unlocked plugin files. Less time downloading, more time making things.

I got the plugins when you were using Pulse for distribution

Your Pulse download codes still work: I moved them to the new system. Download the Felt Instruments Installer and enter your old Pulse code.

How to uninstall a plugin

Open the Felt Instruments Installer and accept the licence terms. Choose "manage a plugin" at the bottom left, then pick the plugin you want to remove. Choose to uninstall, and you are done.

using the plugins

How do I get updates?

All updates are free. Open the Felt Instruments Installer. It checks for updates as it starts, so that is the whole procedure.

I announce new releases and updates in the newsletter. There is a signup at the bottom of any page.

No sound / can't find the samples

This guide applies only to instrument plugins. Effects do not need this procedure.

If you get no sound, the samples folder has most likely moved. It is easy to fix:

  • Open the Felt Instruments Installer and accept the licence terms. Choose "manage a plugin" at the bottom left, then pick the affected plugin. Then re-link the samples folder.

After you re-link it, leave the samples where they are.

Crackles, clicks and dropouts

This guide applies only to instrument plugins. Effects do not need this procedure.

Plugin performance depends on your drive speed, your CPU, your audio interface drivers, and the other plugins in the project. If you hear dropouts, work through the steps below:

  • Check your envelopes. Clicks at the start or end of notes can mean the amp envelopes are set too tightly. Increase the Attack and Release values a little, and listen again before you continue.
  • Set the sample streaming mode. Click the Felt Instruments logo at the top right of the plugin. Under streaming options, Drive uses less RAM but depends on drive speed. RAM loads everything into memory for more consistent performance. These settings apply to all instances.
  • Check your buffer size. Open your DAW preferences and try a larger buffer. 128 is a good place to start, so experiment from there.
  • Move the samples to a faster drive. If you have several drives, keep the samples on the fastest one. Copy the samples folder across. Then open the Felt Instruments Installer, accept the licence terms, choose "manage a plugin" at the bottom left, pick the plugin, and re-link the samples to their new location.

Many sampled instruments at once put a heavy load on your drive. Freeze or bounce tracks if that happens.

How to find the VST3 plugin in my DAW

Some DAWs need you to enable the VST3 plugin format in preferences before it appears. If you cannot find the plugin, check your DAW's own support pages for instructions on how to enable VST3.

If you use GarageBand or Logic, see "The plugin isn't listed in GarageBand or Logic" below. Those apps use AU instead of VST3.

The plugin isn't listed in GarageBand or Logic

Are you looking at the Virtual Instruments panel? That panel is reserved for Apple plugins. To load a Felt Instruments plugin, create a new Virtual Instrument track and load the plugin into the insert slots at the bottom. It is listed under AU Instruments.

How to load an instrument in Pro Tools

Go to Track → New… and create a new stereo instrument track. The stereo part matters, because Pro Tools does not show plugins on a mono instrument track.

Effect plugins work on both stereo and mono tracks.

Crackles and glitches in FL Studio

If you have real-time playback problems in FL Studio, try the steps below:

  • Go to Settings → Audio → CPU and make sure Align tick lengths is on.
  • Enable Use Fixed Size Buffers. In the plugin wrapper, go to the Troubleshooting tab and turn on Use fixed size buffers.
  • Use your audio interface's own drivers instead of FL ASIO. FL ASIO can cause distortion and odd behaviour.
  • If the problem continues, work through "Crackles, clicks and dropouts" above.
Using MPE

Every MPE-compatible patch is marked on its instrument page. MPE needs a compatible DAW. The mapping follows the ROLI specification, so Slide (vertical movement) is mapped to CC74.

After you select MPE mode in the plugin, touch the keys of your MPE controller to start the sound.

Some DAWs need a dedicated MPE mode before they transmit MPE data. Check your DAW's support documentation for setup instructions.

How do I load this into Kontakt?

You do not! Every Felt instrument comes with its own VST3, AU and AAX plugin. Load them straight into your DAW like other plugins.

Which formats and systems are supported?

VST3, AU, AAX. There is no standalone version, so the plugins load in your DAW like other plugins.

macOS 10.13+, Windows 10+ (64-bit)

buying and licences

How does the free trial work?

Every instrument and effect has one, and there is no time limit on it. Here is what is held back:

  • A trial licence is for testing. To release your music, you need a full licence.
  • The sound mutes for a moment now and then.
  • When you reopen a session, the plugin stays muted until you activate it again.
  • Settings return to their defaults when you reopen the session.
  • You cannot save presets.
  • On instruments, some patches are not included.

Buy the full licence whenever you like, and the trial upgrades in place. You then download only what is missing, instead of starting the whole thing again.

VAT and sales tax

Payments are handled by Polar, my merchant of record. Polar takes the payment, charges and remits any taxes, and issues your invoice.

In the UK and the EU the displayed prices include tax, so there is nothing to pay on top of what you see in the cart. In the United States, Canada and India, sales tax is added at checkout, because it depends on your state or province.

Buying as a business in the EU? Apply your VAT ID at checkout for a reverse-charge transaction.

Discounts and loyalty pricing

There are no sales at Felt, because that would not be fair to people who bought earlier. Instead, owning a Felt plugin gets you loyalty pricing: a new-release code every time a plugin comes out, and a bundle-completion code twice a year.

Read more at the loyalty pricing page.

Edu pricing

Students, teachers and people working at a non-profit get 25% off individual plugins. The discount is valid for a year from issue, on as many plugins as you like in that time. It does not apply to bundles, which are already discounted.

To request it, send proof that you are enrolled, teaching, or part of a non-profit to hello@feltinstruments.com. A student or staff ID works. Felt is a one-person company, so please allow me a few days.

More on the edu pricing page.

Refunds

If you have not redeemed your download code, nothing has been delivered yet. Write to me within 30 days of purchase and I will cancel the order and refund you. Include the download code in your email.

Once a code has been redeemed, the instrument is yours for good, so it cannot be returned. Buying a download means you agree that delivery starts at once, and that waives the 14-day right of withdrawal on a digital purchase.

Payment processing fees are not returned to sellers, so 3.8% of the transaction total comes off any refund.

The full terms are on the licence terms page.

Can I re-sell my licence?

Yes. It is fair to sell software you no longer use, and a licence can move to a new owner.

Here is the order:

  1. Write to me at hello@feltinstruments.com before the sale. Every transfer needs my agreement in writing.
  2. Pay the transfer fee: 5% of the plugin's full price.
  3. I move the licence to the new owner.
  4. Remove all plugin files from every machine you installed them on.

The full terms are on the licence terms page.
